I enjoy all of Ms. Enoch's books, and this one as well. The Colonel James "Tolly" and Theresa were immediately drawn to one another. He on the verge of giving up and possibly loosing his leg from neglect and lack of caring and she of finding a man who will not dance like a puppet on a string for her.

The suffering that Tolly went through was extremely real (there is something about a tormented hero that speaks to a woman and reader). I felt myself cringing when he stood up because of the pain he must be enduirng from it.

Theresa, although a spoiled and beautiful, heroine, did come through for him and when she did it was head over heels and to heck with anyone else.

The love scenes were nothing to get excited about which was a shame, That was
extremely disappointing, after all many of us wait impatiently for these moments
when our hero and heroine finally get together. Other then that the story kept me interested and I enjoyed it.

I would have preferred it with an epiloge or at least a little more at the end of the story.

This is the best book of Me. Enoch's that I have read yet! Definitely worth it! My heart is melted.
The basic plot devise of having an extremely sought after heroine and a damaged ex-soldier fall in love, promising the theme of redemption, is a good foundation for romance. Both characters were consumed by guilt. Bartholomew was the only survivor from his regiment in India. He felt his poor judgment had cost his men their lives. Tess felt her actions as a child had caused the deaths of both her parents. The hero was so stricken by his guilt that he allowed his injuries to go untreated and much of the book revolved around his constant suffering. Tess was also paralyzed by her guilt. She strove to never cause a fuss and maintained proper, shallow relationships, trying to be nice to everyone. Together, they were able to come to terms with their guilt and heal each other, in Bartholomew's case, quite literally.

The problem with the book was the believability of the Indian plot. Although Enoch spent a great deal of time describing the widespread destruction and terror of the Indian marauders, apparently, Bartholomew was the sole survivor of any attacks. Since he could not uncover a third party to corroborate his statements, the East India Company, tried to discredit him in an effort to promote low risk investments in the company. When that failed to keep Bartholomew from pursuing full disclosure, they plotted to kill him, setting up a rescue by Tess. If the marauders were such a large threat to British troops, it was inconceivable, that not another soul was available anywhere who could corroborate the hero's story. The more Enoch talked about how horrible the Indian's were, the more the hero's plight seemed contrived and the actions of the attempted cover-up by East India Company, silly. I know suspension of disbelief is a prerequisite to any fiction, especially in the romance genre, but there is a limit.
I liked Theresa because she had a lot of spunk. She bravely stood up for tolly when the ton turned against him. A good love story.
I love all of Suzanne Enoch's book, but this one might be my favorite. It truly has the perfect ending!
I'm in the middle of a Susanne Enoch binge right now. I LOVE that she spends so much time developing the personalities of her male lead characters. Too often writers spend all their time on the women, and the men are left as two dimensional stereotypes. Her characters are interesting and their stories are as interesting as the love stories that they are part of.
Her books are always so well written and amazing. I love any book she writes because its guaranteed too be the beset book you read.
I just re-read this one again. I love a good underdog story. This series is full of great characters with huge difficulties to overcome and lots of wonderful intrigue. The hero and heroine have a believable story arc not insta-love or contrived misunderstandings that last forever. Their relationship and the overall action of the book keep you hooked and waiting for the next turn until the very last page. Enjoy!
